Terms of Service
Last updated October 2026.
These terms cover your use of HireAVeteran.org and the job board at jobs.hireaveteran.org (together, “the site”), operated by Salute Veterans Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (“we”, “us”). By using the site, creating an account, posting a job or buying anything on it, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
Some sections apply to everyone, some only to job seekers, some only to employers, and some only to partners. The headings say which.
1. Who can use the site
You must be at least 18 years old to create an account, apply for a job through the site, post a job or join the partner program. If you use the site on behalf of a company or organization, you confirm that you have the authority to bind it to these terms, and “you” includes that organization.
You may not use the site if you are barred from doing so under U.S. law, or if we have previously closed your account for breaking these terms.
2. Your account
Give accurate information when you register and keep it up to date. You are responsible for everything done through your account, so keep your password private and tell us straight away if you think someone else has used it. One person per job seeker account; employers may add team members where the site allows it, and are responsible for what those team members do.
You may close your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account, or remove any content, if we reasonably believe it breaks these terms, puts other users at risk, or exposes us to legal liability.
3. What the site is, and what it is not
HireAVeteran.org is a job board and a set of career tools. We publish job listings and give employers and job seekers a way to find each other. We are not an employment agency, a staffing firm or a recruiter, we are not a party to any hiring decision, and we do not employ anyone who is hired through the site.
We do not guarantee that a job seeker will be hired, that an employer will receive applications or a certain number of views, or that any listing, employer or candidate is what it claims to be. Any employment relationship is solely between the employer and the job seeker.
There is no charge to job seekers to search for jobs, apply, create a profile or use the tools.
4. Job listings and where they come from
Listings on the site come from several places: jobs posted directly by employers; jobs gathered automatically from third-party sources and job feeds (sometimes with the help of automated or AI tools that match and categorize them); and federal announcements from USAJOBS, operated by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
We do not write third-party listings and we do not verify the employers behind them. A listing appearing on the site is not an endorsement of that employer or a statement that the job is still open. Applying to a third-party listing may take you to the employer’s own site or to another job site, and what happens there is governed by their terms, not ours.
Categories, tags and labels (for example “security clearance required” or “SkillBridge eligible”) are applied by employers or automatically, and may be wrong. Always confirm the details with the employer.
5. Staying safe
A real employer will never ask you to pay to apply, to buy equipment or training before you start, or to cash a check and send money on. Do not give anyone your Social Security number, bank details or copies of identity documents until you have confirmed the employer is genuine and you have a written offer.
If a listing or a message looks fraudulent, report it to us. You can also report scams to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
6. For job seekers
When you apply for a job through the site, the information you submit (your profile, resume, cover letter and answers to any questions) is sent to that employer. Once an employer has it, how they use and keep it is governed by their own policies, not ours.
If you create a profile, you control what it contains and, where the site offers the setting, who can see it. Depending on your settings, your profile may be visible to employers who have access to our candidate database, and may be visible to the public and to search engines. Do not put anything in your profile that you would not want an employer to see, and do not include your Social Security number, date of birth, financial details or medical information.
Everything you submit must be true and your own. Do not misrepresent your military service, discharge status, rank, awards, clearance, qualifications or work history. Falsely claiming military service or decorations can be a crime.
You may sign up for job alert emails and can unsubscribe at any time using the link in each email.
7. For employers: posting jobs
Every job you post must be a real, current opening that you are authorized to advertise. By posting, you confirm that the listing, and your hiring process, comply with all applicable laws, including:
- equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination laws, including those protecting veterans, service members, people with disabilities and every other protected group (among them Title VII, the ADA, the ADEA, USERRA and, where they apply to you, VEVRAA and Section 503);
- pay transparency laws that require a salary range in the listing in some states and cities;
- laws on background checks and consumer reports, including the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and on immigration and work authorization;
- wage and hour laws, and laws on how applicant information may be collected and used.
Saying that you value military experience or welcome veteran applicants is encouraged. You are responsible for making sure that any veterans’ preference you apply is lawful where you hire.
You may not post:
- listings that are false, misleading, or for a job that does not exist, including listings posted only to collect resumes;
- jobs that require the applicant to pay anything, buy a starter kit, inventory or training, or recruit others (including multi-level marketing and pyramid schemes);
- commission-only or independent-contractor roles without saying so clearly in the listing;
- business opportunities, franchises, investment schemes or anything that is not a job;
- adult, sexually explicit, or illegal work, or anything involving weapons trafficking, controlled substances, gambling where unlawful, or money transfers on someone else’s behalf;
- listings that ask applicants for a Social Security number, bank or card details, or identity documents as part of applying;
- discriminatory language, or anything defamatory, harassing or infringing someone else’s rights;
- links or code designed to harm visitors, collect data deceptively or redirect them elsewhere.
Staffing agencies and recruiters may post on behalf of clients, but the listing must make clear that it is posted by an agency or recruiter.
We may review, edit for formatting, decline, or remove any listing at any time. We may also display your listings on other pages of the site and share them with search engines and job distribution partners (such as Google for Jobs), in email alerts, and on social media. Our partners may share links to your listings too. By posting, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to display, format, distribute and promote the listing and your company name and logo for as long as the listing is live and for a reasonable time afterward.
8. For employers: candidate information
Applications and candidate profiles you receive through the site may be used only to recruit for genuine openings at your organization (or, for agencies, your clients). You may not sell, rent, share or publish candidate information, add candidates to marketing lists, send them unsolicited commercial email, or download or copy the candidate database in bulk, manually or with automated tools.
You are responsible for handling the candidate information you receive lawfully and securely, for responding to candidates’ privacy requests about the data you hold, and for deleting it when you no longer need it. Access to the candidate database ends when your package or subscription ends.
9. Payments, packages and subscriptions
Prices are shown on the site before you buy and are in U.S. dollars. Payments are processed by Stripe; we do not see or store your full card number. Prices do not include any sales or other taxes that may apply, and you are responsible for those.
Single postings are a one-time purchase. The listing stays live for the period shown at purchase.
Monthly packages and subscriptions renew automatically at the price shown at purchase, on the same date each billing period, and your payment method will be charged on each renewal until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from your employer dashboard or by contacting us. Cancellation stops future charges; your package stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for. We will tell you in advance, by email, before we change the price of a subscription you hold, and the new price applies only from the next renewal after that notice.
Discount codes apply only as described when you use them (for example, a partner’s code applies once, to your first purchase). They have no cash value and cannot be combined unless we say so.
Refunds. Because a listing starts working as soon as it is published, fees are non-refundable once a listing has gone live, and we do not give partial refunds for the unused part of a billing period. If you are charged in error, or a listing could not be published because of a fault on our side, contact us within 30 days and we will put it right. If we remove a listing because it breaks these terms, no refund is due. Nothing here affects any refund right you have under the law.
If a payment fails or is disputed, we may pause your listings and package until it is resolved. Please contact us before opening a chargeback; most problems are quicker to fix directly.
10. The partner program
Partners (organizations, creators and recruiters) can earn a share of posting fees from employers who sign up through their unique link or code. Joining the program is subject to the partner terms you accept at signup, together with the partner page and partner FAQ. If those conflict with these terms on a partner matter, the partner terms apply.
Partners must clearly disclose, whenever they share their link or code, that they may earn a commission or benefit (as the Federal Trade Commission’s endorsement guides require). Partners must not use spam, misleading claims, paid search on our brand names, fake accounts, or self-referrals or reciprocal referrals arranged only to obtain discounts or commissions. Breaking these rules ends the partnership and forfeits unpaid commission earned through the breach.
11. The career tools
The Skills Translator, Resume Builder, Interview Prep, Pay Calculator and the other tools are provided to help you make your own decisions. They are general information, not career, legal, tax, financial or benefits advice, and using them does not create a professional relationship of any kind. Calculators work only on the figures you supply and on figures that were accurate when written. Rules on veterans’ preference, hiring authorities and benefits are set by law and change; confirm your own position with the agency, the VA or a qualified adviser before relying on anything here.
12. Acceptable use
You may not:
- scrape, crawl or copy the site, its listings or its candidate data by automated means, except search engines following our robots rules;
- interfere with the site’s operation or security, probe it for vulnerabilities without permission, or upload anything malicious;
- impersonate anyone, or create accounts by automated means or under false pretenses;
- use the site to send spam or to contact users for any purpose other than a genuine job opportunity;
- post anything unlawful, harassing, hateful, defamatory or infringing;
- resell or commercially reuse the site, its content or access to it without our written permission.
If you find a security problem, please tell us privately and give us a reasonable chance to fix it.
13. Content and intellectual property
The site’s design, text, tools, code and our names and logos belong to Salute Veterans Inc. or our licensors. Quoting a passage with a link back is welcome; copying whole pages is not.
You keep ownership of what you post (your profile, resume, listings and company content). You give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, display, format and distribute it as needed to run and promote the site and provide the services you have asked for. That license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies kept in backups for a limited time, copies already sent to an employer at your request, and anything we must keep by law.
You confirm that you have the right to post what you post and that it does not infringe anyone else’s rights.
14. Copyright complaints
If you believe something on the site infringes your copyright, send us a notice through our contact page or by mail to the address below, including: your contact details; the work you say is infringed; where the material appears on the site; a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorized; a statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner; and your physical or electronic signature. We will respond under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and will close the accounts of repeat infringers.
15. Third-party services and links
The site relies on and links to services run by others, including our job board platform, payment processor, job feeds, USAJOBS, and employers’ own websites. We are not responsible for their content, availability or practices, and your use of them is subject to their own terms.
16. No warranty
The site is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not guarantee that the site will be uninterrupted, secure or error-free, that listings are accurate or current, or that any user is who they say they are.
17. Limits on our liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Salute Veterans Inc. and its directors, officers, volunteers and contractors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost wages, lost opportunities or lost data, arising from your use of the site, including a job you did not get, an offer you accepted, a hire that did not work out, or a decision made on information found here.
Our total liability for any claim relating to the site is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose, or one hundred U.S. dollars.
Some places do not allow some of these limits, so they may not all apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
18. Your responsibility to us
If you post a listing, contact a user, or otherwise use the site in a way that breaks these terms or the law, and someone brings a claim against us because of it, you agree to defend and compensate Salute Veterans Inc. for the resulting losses and reasonable legal costs. This includes, for employers, claims arising from your listings or your hiring decisions.
19. Ending your use of the site
You can stop using the site and close your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, if we are required to by law, or if we stop offering the site. Sections that by their nature should continue (including payment obligations, intellectual property, candidate information, the disclaimers, the limits on liability, your responsibility to us and disputes) continue after your account closes.
20. Disputes and governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and applicable U.S. federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you have a problem, please contact us first and give us 30 days to try to resolve it informally. Any dispute that cannot be resolved that way will be heard only in the state or federal courts located in Virginia, and you and we both consent to their jurisdiction. Either of us may instead bring an individual claim in small claims court where it qualifies.
21. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top will change when we do. If a change materially affects your rights, we will give reasonable notice, for example by email or on the site, before it takes effect. Continuing to use the site after a change takes effect means you accept it. Changes do not apply to purchases already made or to disputes already raised.
22. General
These terms, the privacy policy and any terms shown at purchase or partner signup are the whole agreement between you and us about the site. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up. You may not transfer your rights under these terms without our consent; we may transfer ours as part of a reorganization or transfer of the site. We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control. You agree that we may send you notices and records electronically, by email or on the site.
