Privacy Policy

Last updated October 2026.

This policy explains what information HireAVeteran.org and the job board at jobs.hireaveteran.org (together, “the site”) collect, how it is used, who it is shared with, and the choices you have. The site is operated by Salute Veterans Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (“we”, “us”). It should be read with our terms of use.

1. The career tools keep your information in your browser

The Skills Translator, Resume Builder, LinkedIn Profile Builder, Interview Prep, Pay Calculator, Salary Negotiation page and Application Tracker run in your browser. What you type into them (your military code, work history, pay figures and applications) is saved in your browser’s own storage so you can come back to it. It is not sent to us. Clearing your browser data removes it.

This is separate from the job board. If you create a job board account, the information below applies to what you give the job board.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us.

  • Job seekers: your name, email address, password, and anything you add to your profile or applications, such as your resume, work history, education, military background, skills, location, links, photo, cover letters and answers to employers’ questions.
  • Employers: your name, work email, company name, logo, description and website, the job listings you post, and billing details. Payments are handled by Stripe; we receive confirmation of payment and limited details such as the card type and last four digits, but never your full card number.
  • Partners: the information on your partner application, your payout details (handled by our partner platform and payment provider), and the referrals credited to you.
  • Anyone: what you send through a contact form or by email, and your job alert subscriptions.

Information collected automatically. When you use the site, we and our service providers record technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, pages viewed, the page you came from, the time of your visit and approximate location derived from your IP address. We also record activity on the job board, such as the jobs you view, save and apply to, and email opens and clicks.

Information from others. Job listings gathered from third-party sources and job feeds, and federal announcements from USAJOBS. If an employer or our team invites you to claim a profile or account, we may hold the details they provided.

Please do not give us sensitive information we have not asked for, such as your Social Security number, financial account numbers, medical or disability information, or details of your discharge characterization. Information you choose to share about your military service or veteran status is used only to run the site and is shared with employers only as described below.

3. How we use information

  • to run the job board: creating and managing accounts, publishing listings and profiles, matching and showing relevant jobs, and sending your applications to the employers you choose;
  • to send the emails you have asked for, such as job alerts, and service emails about your account, applications, purchases and renewals;
  • to process payments, prevent fraud, and keep financial and tax records;
  • to run the partner program, including crediting referrals and paying commission;
  • to keep the site secure, detect spam, scam listings and abuse, and enforce our terms;
  • to understand how the site is used so we can improve it;
  • to comply with the law and respond to lawful requests.

Where we use automated tools (for example to parse a resume you upload, or to categorize and match jobs), they are used to fill in forms and organize listings. We do not use them to make hiring decisions; employers make their own.

4. Who we share information with

  • Employers you apply to receive your application, resume and profile. After that, their own privacy policy governs what they do with it.
  • Employers with candidate database access may see your profile, depending on the visibility settings you choose. Our terms limit them to using it for genuine recruiting.
  • The public and search engines may see your profile if you make it public. Job listings and company pages are public.
  • Service providers who run parts of the site for us and may only use the information to do so, including our job board platform (JBoard), website host (SiteGround), payment processor (Stripe), email delivery provider, partner program platform, analytics provider (StatCounter) and resume parsing service.
  • Partners learn that an employer they referred has signed up and paid, and the amount their commission is based on. They do not receive job seekers’ information.
  • Legal and safety: when required by law, to respond to valid legal process, or to protect the rights, safety or property of our users, the public or us.
  • Organizational change: if the site is transferred to another organization, information may transfer with it, subject to this policy.

We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

  • Essential cookies keep you signed in, remember your settings and keep the site secure.
  • Visitor statistics. We use StatCounter on HireAVeteran.org to count visits and see which pages and tools are used. The job board platform may use its own analytics. Statistics record that a page was opened, not what you type into the tools. You can opt out of StatCounter at statcounter.com, and most browsers can block these cookies.
  • Referral tracking. If you arrive through a partner’s link, our partner platform sets a cookie so the partner can be credited if you later sign up and pay as an employer. It records the referral, and expires after a set period.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies will stop parts of the job board from working.

6. Emails

Job alerts are sent only if you subscribe, and every alert has an unsubscribe link. Service emails about your account, applications, purchases and subscriptions are part of the service and are sent while your account is open. We do not add you to marketing lists you did not ask for.

7. How long we keep information

We keep account and profile information while your account is open. When you close your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information within a reasonable period, except where we must keep it longer: payment and tax records are kept for as long as the law requires (generally up to seven years), and copies may remain in backups for a limited time until they are overwritten. Applications already sent to an employer are held by that employer under its own policy. Contact form submissions are kept as long as needed to deal with them.

8. Security

We and our providers use reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards, including encrypted connections, to protect information. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires.

9. Your choices and rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy;
  • correct information that is wrong;
  • delete your information or close your account;
  • stop sending you job alerts or other optional emails.

You can edit your profile, change its visibility, and delete your account from your dashboard at any time. For anything else, contact us. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on a request, and we will respond within 45 days. You may use an authorized agent, and we will not treat you differently for exercising these rights. Residents of some states have additional rights under state privacy laws; we will honor them where they apply, and you may appeal a decision on your request by replying to our response.

We cannot delete information an employer already holds after you applied to them; please contact that employer directly.

10. Children

The site is for adults looking for work and the employers and organizations that support them. You must be 18 or older to create an account. The site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Where information is processed

The site and our service providers operate in the United States, and information is stored and processed there. If you use the site from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those where you live.

12. Other sites

Applying to some jobs takes you to an employer’s own site, another job site or USAJOBS, and links to VeteransDirectory.com, VeteransDonations.org and SaluteVeterans.org lead to sites operated separately. Their privacy practices are their own.

13. Changes to this policy

We will update the date at the top when this policy changes. If a change materially affects how we use your personal information, we will tell you in advance, by email or on the site.
